Oh. My. God. Wendy Davis, the stalwart supporter of abortion rights, seems to be a little behind on current events. She doesn’t know who Kermit Gosnell is, or his crimes.Well, he’s only a depraved Philadelphia abortionist, who murdered babies, kept their body parts in jars, and was left to operate freely once pro-choice Republican Governor Tom Ridge decided to suspended inspecting abortion clinics after 1993. It’s the case that put the horrors of late-term abortion front and center. While it was only for a short time, it did garner national attention once conservatives shamed the liberal media into covering the case. Nevertheless, Davis, who was at the National Press Club today, told the Weekly Standard that she didn’t “know what happened in the Gosnell case.”
THE WEEKLY STANDARD: The supporters of these bans, they argue that there really isn’t much of a difference between what happened in that Philadelphia case with abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell [killing born-alive infants] 23 weeks into pregnancy and legal late-term abortions at 23 weeks. What is the difference between those two, between legal abortion at 23 weeks and what Gosnell did? Do you see a distinction between those two [acts]?
SEN. WENDY DAVIS: I don’t know what happened in the Gosnell case. But I do know that it happened in an ambulatory surgical center. And in Texas changing our clinics to that standard obviously isn’t going to make a difference. The state of the law obviously has to assure that doctors are providing safe procedures for women and that proper oversight by the health and human services department is being given. It sounds as though there was a huge gap in that oversight, and no one can defend that. But that’s not the landscape of what’s happening in Texas.
Wow! Willful ignorance on behalf of liberal supporters of abortion — I’m shocked! Let’s take a look at the grand jury report.
Investigators found the clinic grossly unsuitable as a surgical facility. The two surgical procedure rooms were filthy and unsanitary – Agent Dougherty described them as resembling “a bad gas station restroom.” Instruments were not sterile. Equipment was rusty and outdated.
Also, Ms. Davis, your side is against inspections, oversight, and safety procedures. Pro-choice policies are how Gosnell was able to wage his 17-year campaign of butchery. Who are you kidding?
If she was playing dumb – and that’s a big “if”– I don’t blame her. It’s hard defending the indefensible. After all, how could one spin the murder of babies in the second, or third, trimesters without looking like a depraved fool salivating over dead infants? It makes it all the more politically unpalatable when the American people find the thought of aborting babies during the second and third trimesters appalling – and something that should illegal.
In fact, more women than men are in favor of 20-week abortion bans. So, you can see how her political power base is relegated to the far left abortion fringe, who don’t even call “babies” babies since it undercuts their narrative. Yet, it doesn’t matter if you call them children, infants, babies, munchkins (my mom’s term), or a bundle of cells – the only reason Davis, and her ilk, are even at the table is because the media supports her position of unlimited abortion. That’s why she’s been elevated in our political discourse.
She’s not a governor, a U.S. senator, a congresswoman, or a doctor. She’s just an abortion-loving Texas lawmaker, who managed to speak for ten hours against a bill that was supported by 62% of Texans. A bill that was eventually passed in the state legislature and signed into law. At the same time, not knowing who is Kermit Gosnell? C’mon!
UPDATE: Apparently, Davis thinks pro-life women “don’t really understand” abortion.
TWS: What do you make of polls showing that a majority of women support these late-term bans? There have been a few polls–Washington Post, Huffington Post, different polls–that show women support this. What do you think of those polls?
DAVIS: I again think that a lot of people don’t really understand the landscape of what’s happening in that arena today and what an incredibly small percentage of procedures take place there, but, ah…
Yeah, it’s not the best idea to call your supposed base of support idiots.
